Slow Release Nitrogen Lawn Fertilizer

Nitrogen lawn fertilizer is highly essential for your lawn in that it increases the color of the grass, allows it to re-establish itself after environmental invasiveness, and is a preventative measure as to the infestation of disease as well as the annoying growth of weeds.  Lawn fertilizer containing the nutrient Nitrogen comes in two forms:  fast release and slow release with fast release being the most affordable.

Nitrogen lawn fertilizer consists of Nitrogen (n), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K).  Nitrogen, out of the three major nutrients just indicated is the most significant.  However, too much Nitrogen may lead to too much growth on top which will lead to other associated problems.  You may find the percent of Nitrogen as one of first of three numbers indicated on the bag.  The first number is essential in that it is indicative of how much lawn fertilizer is needed.  In example if you are using a Fertilizer high in Nitrogen then less is needed.  Generally you should use one pound of nitrogen for one thousand square feet –that is if the ratio is average.  The ratio should be 3:1:2 or 4:1:2.  The second two numbers represent phosphorus and potassium ratios respectively.

There are two types of nitrogen lawn fertilizer as stated in paragraph one:  slow release and fast release.  Since fast release may cause grass burn slow release is the one that is recommended.  However, check the guarantee of fast release nitrogen as there are many benefits associated with the product.  If the product information indicates water insoluble nitrogen than the fertilizer is slow release.

The advantages of fast release nitrogen lawn fertilizer include:

1.    It provides quick greening of your lawn;
2.    It will provide the nutrient of nitrogen to cold soil;
3.    It is affordable.

The advantages of slow release nitrogen lawn fertilizer include:

1.    The grass grows in a more uniform manner; and,
2.    The product is unlikely to cause grass burn

Conclusively both types of nitrogen lawn fertilizer fast release and slow release can be beneficial for your lawn.  However in using the fast release formula it may be necessary to proceed with caution on the first application in order to avoid grass burn. It will provide a nice green lawn when applied correctly.
